Tensions between the U.S. and Russia once again make their way to the top of the bulletin following America’s barrage of new sanctions on Moscow and dismissal of its diplomats from the country.
The big move by President Biden was strongly felt in Moscow, which as of now has retaliated by removing ten U.S. diplomats from the country and warns to do more in the coming days.
Relations between the United States and Russia took a swift turn following Biden’s accusation of Russian intervention in the 2020 elections, its massive cyber campaign aimed at mining sensitive U.S. information, and some other maleficent moves.
It is already intense, but President Biden seems to think otherwise, as he said that America was “proportionate,” and the consequences could have been far worse.
“The United States is not looking to kick off a cycle of escalation and conflict with Russia. We want a stable, predictable relationship.”
“I was clear with President Putin that we could have gone further, but I chose not to do so. I chose to be proportionate,” referring to his April 13 on-call conversation with the Russian counterpart.
On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recorded an aggressive response and said that Moscow is to move eight U.S. administrative officials onto the sanction list and that it is geared to curb the activities of the American organizations in the country and the Russian politics.
“We will respond to this measure in a tit-for-tat manner. We will ask 10 U.S. diplomats in Russia to leave the country.”
Furthermore, Kermiln has already told the U.S. ambassador to Russia to return to the country, following the footsteps of his counterpart and carry out serious “consultations.”
How will the matter conclude? It is yet to find, but it is clear that none of the parties would let it go easily as Lavrov said that “not a single wave of sanctions will go unpunished.” and that the U.S. should show some “prudence by abandoning the confrontational course”.
