The 93rd Academy Awards: Some surprises and some really nice surprises

The biggest night in Cinema, i.e., the annual Oscar ceremony for 2021 was a close yet fairly predictable affair. It was held at LA’s Dolby Theatre and at Union Station. The Awards night was delayed by 2 months due to the pandemic.

The 93rd Academy Awards boasted of many firsts – the list of nominees was the most diverse in the history of the Oscars; Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were merged into the Best Sound category award; and instead of the Best Picture award, the Best Actor award was the last one to be handed out.

Chadwick Boseman, who passed away last year due to cancer, had swept most of the awards for the year for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. However, he lost the Best Actor Oscar to Anthony Hopkins. Anthony won the award for his performance in ‘The Father’. He did not personally pick up the trophy. This was his second Best Actor Oscar award.

Frances McDormand won the Best Actress award for the movie Nomadland. With this win, she has 3 Best Actress Oscars, thus matching the 3 Best Actor Oscars of Daniel Day-Lewis. She had previously won Best Actress Academy Awards for ‘Fargo’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’.

Nomadland won the Best Picture Award. The director of the film Chloe Zhao also won the Best Director Oscar. With the win, she became the second woman (after Kathryn Bigelow) and the first woman of color to win this award.

Youn Yuh-jung won the Best Supporting Actress for Minari, while Daniel Kaluuya won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Judas And The Black Messiah. Youn Yuh-jung Oscar acceptance speech was met with loud applause.
